Elon Musk has recently made a big announcement. He said that the like button on X (earlier Twitter) will no longer be just a means of expressing liking. By long pressing the Like button, you will be able to send $1 directly to someone. This payment will be done through X Money. In Musk’s words, people who love their work will be able to pay creators with a single tap. This facility is bringing social media and digital payments very close.

First of all let us understand what is X Money. X Money is the big dream of Elon Musk, in which he wants to make X not just a social media platform but an ‘everything app’. That means, along with chat, posts, news, sending, receiving, saving and spending money, everything can be done in a single app. X Money is actually a digital wallet and payment system inside X. It began rolling out to Premium and Premium Plus users in the US in mid-2026.

In this, users can keep money, send it to friends instantly, spend through Visa debit card and can also earn interest on the deposited amount. According to some reports, facilities like up to 6% annual interest on deposits and 3 percent cashback on cards are being provided. Money remains safe in partner banks and is also FDIC insured.

Pressing the button for a long time will do the work

Now the new feature is making it more special. A normal like only gets a heart symbol, but by holding the like button for a while, a tip of 1 dollar will go directly to the X Money account of the creator of the post. No separate page will open, no card details will have to be entered and there will be no lengthy confirmation process. Complete payment in just one gesture. This can prove to be a game-changer for the creator economy. Small creators, teachers, writers or anyone who puts out good content can now earn small amounts of money directly from their fans.

How is it different from the rest?

There are many things that make X Money different from other payment systems. Traditional methods like PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, or Stripe Tip involve many steps. You have to open the app, find the username or phone number, enter the amount and then confirm. Many times fees are also deducted. Whereas in X Money the payment is being done at the same place where you are watching the content. Friction i.e. hassle is almost zero. If you like the post while reading it, you can give instant reward by long pressing it.

The second big difference is integration. Most payment apps are limited to sending and receiving money only. X Money is becoming a part of the entire financial ecosystem. It includes wallet, debit card, interest bearing savings, bill payment and more facilities are going to be added in future. When payment is added to the habit of social media, the user experience becomes completely different. Creators do not have to add a separate ‘Tip Jar’ link. Payment is linked to their post only.

The third difference is speed and simplicity. The facility of sending small amounts of one dollar so easily was rarely seen before. Sending small amounts on most platforms did not seem practical because the process was lengthy.

Here the $1 tip has been made so easy that people can give without thinking. If thousands of people like a post and some percentage of them long press, then the creator can earn a good amount of money.

This facility is not limited to just tipping. This is part of Elon Musk’s bigger vision, in which banking, investment and everyday financial functions are also going to come on X. Musk, who first created PayPal, is now trying to turn the social platform into a financial super app. The dream is to provide everything at one place like China’s WeChat.

One mistake can lead to trouble

Of course there are some challenges also. Some users are afraid of long pressing by mistake. Strong arrangements to prevent security and fraud will be necessary. Currently this facility is mainly limited in America and will expand gradually. Still the direction is clear. Social media is no longer just a place for talking and viewing content. Now along with expressing love, financial support can also be done in one tap.

X Money and this new like-to-pay feature are a big step towards empowering creators and making the platform more useful. If it is implemented successfully then other companies will also learn from it. In the coming time, perhaps such an easy payment system will be seen in every social app.
