A rebooting problem has surfaced in Apple’s new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. After Face ID authentication fails in some users’ phones, the screen freezes, touch stops working and after a few seconds the phone restarts automatically.

This issue is not affecting all users, but several cases have been reported on social media and in 9to5Mac reader reports. Apple has now confirmed the problem and said that a software update is being prepared to fix it, which may be available early next week.

Phone freezes when Face ID fails

According to the report, this problem especially arises when an attempt is made to open a secure app through Face ID and the authentication fails. 9to5Mac also tested this problem again on the iPhone 18 Pro.

During the test, authentication failed due to placing hand in front of the Face ID sensor. After this the phone stopped taking touch input and after a few seconds a hard reboot took place. The panic log related to this also appeared under the iPhone Analytics section in the phone’s Settings.

Bug may be related to new Face ID design

Apple has redesigned the Face ID system in the iPhone 18 Pro series. Its infrared camera is now placed behind the display, around the clock in the status bar. Due to this change, the visible Dynamic Island of the phone has also become smaller by about 25 percent.

However, there is currently no evidence to suggest that new hardware is the cause of the rebooting problem. Initial reports point towards a software bug.

no need to change phone

Some users considered this problem to be a hardware fault and even tried to change the phone from Apple. But now the software fix has been confirmed by Apple, so there is no need to replace the device for this particular problem.

Apple has not yet clarified in which software version this fix will come. However, indications related to the testing of iOS 27.0.1 have emerged and this update may come to fix similar bugs.

Apart from this, Apple has also released watchOS 27.0.1 to fix the problem of random restart in Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4.
