Meta, the company that runs Facebook and Instagram, said on October 7, 2026 that it took action on 53 lakh pieces of content related to sexual exploitation of children in India between January and June 2026. According to the company, more than 98 percent of these materials were such that its system itself identified and removed them. This means that no user’s complaint was waited for for every post.

According to PTI report, Meta said that its platforms are continuously using monitoring and technical systems to prevent content related to sexual exploitation of children. According to the company, it had itself identified more than 98 percent of such content found on Facebook and Instagram. After this the material was removed and action was taken as per the rules. It is important to understand here that the figure of 53 lakh reflects action related to individual posts, photos, videos or other content. This cannot be considered as the number of 53 lakh separate people.

The government had said – will not tolerate

This statement of Meta has come at a time when government pressure is increasing regarding the safety of children on social media platforms in India. Spreading child-related obscene material on the internet is a serious crime. the government has Meta was warned by summoning officials That such actions will not be tolerated. Due to the large number of users on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, it is a big challenge for companies to stop such content. After deleting a post, the same content can resurface from another account.

Meta said – many steps were taken

The company said it has taken additional steps to strengthen its efforts against material related to child sexual exploitation. This not only means removing objectionable posts, but also trying to prevent such content from appearing on the platform again. Meta’s systems use technology to identify suspicious content, remove it, and take appropriate action when necessary. The company says that it is continuously strengthening its systems against such material targeting children.
