The government had warned Meta on this issue.

Just a few weeks ago, the Indian government had warned Mark Zuckerberg’s company Meta. It was said that objectionable content related to children should be immediately removed from Facebook and Instagram. This should not happen in future. The matter was so serious that Zuckerberg even had to apologize. Now, in an American investigation, the same misdeeds of Meta have been exposed. The American agency’s investigation has found that more than 300 such paid advertisements were run on Facebook and Instagram, in which real pictures of children were converted into sexually exploitative content with the help of AI.

In August, Meta’s global team held a meeting with Indian officials. At that time, the government had given a clear message to Meta that no carelessness would be accepted regarding such content related to children. At that time, hardly anyone would have thought that the investigation conducted in America after some time would reveal such a picture of Meta’s system, which would make India’s concern more serious.

Now what did the investigation from America reveal?

According to the investigation by Tech Transparency Project (TTP), more than 300 AI-generated or AI manipulated advertisements were found on Meta’s platform. Photographs of children were used in these advertisements and in many cases, publicly available photographs of real children are alleged to have been transformed into objectionable content through AI. According to investigators, some advertisements were directing users towards AI applications developed in China. These also included AI tools that could be used for so-called nudification.

Meaning the picture is real, the obscenity is of AI!

This is the most dangerous aspect of this entire matter. A normal photograph of a child is public on social media or the internet. Someone takes that picture and with the help of AI tool creates an objectionable version of it. After this, the same content reaches big social media platforms through advertisements. That is, AI has not only increased the risk of creating fake content, but has also increased the risk of misuse of public pictures of children manifold.

Meta took action, but the question survived

The company took action after the TTP report. According to the report, about 150 advertisements present in the Ad Library were removed. Additionally, records of more than 100 previously removed advertisements were later classified as violating the Child Exploitation Policy. The question is that if Meta had the technology to identify and remove content on such a large scale, then why were these advertisements not caught earlier?
