Earthquake Alert will come in iPhone! China talking to Apple.
China Earthquake Administration recently confirmed that they are in talks with Apple to integrate the official Earthquake Warning System into iOS. This step was taken after a citizen suggested that like other major brands Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo already have this feature available at the system level, but iPhone users are not able to use this feature.
The China Earthquake Network Center is in contact with Apple and is trying to speed up the process. Currently, iPhone users can receive official alerts through WeChat Mini Program. The world’s largest earthquake early-warning network was commissioned in the country in July 2024, which has issued more than 700 warnings in the last two years.
Current situation and conversation
Responding to public suggestions on the official website of the China Earthquake Administration, it was reported that the China Earthquake Network Center is actively communicating with Apple Company. The goal is to incorporate official earthquake early-warning information into the iOS system as quickly as possible. This effort is going on from 2025, in which several rounds of discussions have taken place before, but complete integration has not been done yet. Currently, the alternative way for iPhone users is the WeChat Mini Program, where official alerts come.
Comparison with other brands
Brands like Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo have already made the alert system of the national authority available through a built-in feature in the system. This deficiency is being felt in the iPhone because iOS requires direct system-level integration. Recently, during the 4.7 magnitude earthquake in Yibin, Sichuan in August 2026, some third-party systems sent a false 7.7 magnitude warning, further highlighting the importance of official channels.
SAIL Broadcast and future plans
The authority clarified that alerts based on cell broadcast technology can reach any smartphone brand as they work through mobile base stations. China Earthquake Administration is working with industry and information technology departments to include earthquake early warning in this system.
