The accident related to fridge blast in Belagavi, Karnataka has raised questions on the safety of this common electronic item used in the house. According to media reports, four people of the same family died in a fire in a house in Chavat Galli area in Belagavi on Monday night, while two people were seriously injured. The entire family was present in the house on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi and was sleeping at night. After the explosion the fire spread rapidly.
Initial reports suggest that the fire broke out after the refrigerator exploded. However, the police is still investigating the exact cause of the accident. The biggest question after this incident is what could be the reasons for refrigerator explosion and also what small safety tips can be used in the house to reduce the risk of fire.
How can a refrigerator explode?
The fridge runs continuously on electricity, so the risk of electrical fault in it is not completely eliminated. A faulty or loose plug, burnt wiring, sparking in a socket or overloading a circuit can cause fire. Some refrigerators also use flammable refrigerants, so any leakage may increase the risk of fire.
keeping the refrigerator completely stuck to the wall
There should be enough space for air circulation behind and around the refrigerator. The motor and compressor work continuously and require ventilation to expel heat. Keeping the refrigerator in a very closed place or keeping items behind it can increase the heat. It is better to maintain the distance specified in the manufacturer’s guidelines.
Installing an Extension Board or Multi-Plug
It is safer to plug large electronic items like a refrigerator directly into a proper and large sized wall socket. Installing cheap extension boards or multiple high-powered devices on a single board can increase the risk of overload and overheating. If you notice black marks or burning smell on the plug or socket, do not ignore it.
Ignoring noise, sparks, or excessive heat
If the fridge suddenly starts making strange noises, the plug or socket becomes unusually hot, crackling or sparking sounds, frequent MCB trips or a burning smell, then it is not right to continue using the fridge. In such a situation, switch off the power connection safely and get it checked.
not cleaning the back of the fridge
Accumulation of dust and dirt behind the refrigerator can cause difficulty in getting the heat out. Therefore, clean it from time to time and get the servicing done as per the manufacturer’s advice. If the fridge is very old or is frequently breaking down, it is better to get it checked by a technician instead of getting it repaired by a local mechanic.
keeping flammable items around the refrigerator
Do not keep paper, clothes, plastic or other easily flammable items behind or around the refrigerator. Do not keep it near a gas stove, heater, radiator or any place where there is continuous high heat. Do not place lamps, candles or decorations around the refrigerator during festivals. This increases the risk of fire.
DIY wiring repair
A refrigerator contains gas, compressor and electrical parts, so opening the wiring or repairing gas-related parts yourself at home can be risky. If the fridge is tripping frequently, getting too hot, smelling burning or the wiring looks damaged, get it checked by a technician instead of continuing to run it.
