Under the new rule, it may be necessary to have the SIM of the mobile number to which the messaging app account is linked in the same device on which the app is being used. In such a situation, there is a possibility that the app’s services may be affected if the SIM is removed from the phone or the SIM becomes inactive.
The aim of the government is to curb online fraud, fake accounts and misuse of mobile numbers. It is alleged that cyber thugs continue to use messaging apps without SIM even after getting the account verified with an Indian number. SIM binding is expected to help prevent such cases. To curb this, WhatsApp rules are being changed from January 1, 2027.

This change may affect those people who use two phones or use WhatsApp only through WiFi on older smartphones. Technical arrangements will also be important for eSIM users and iPhone users. However, how much impact this rule will have on different devices and users will depend on its technical implementation. Presently you can install WhatsApp by inserting SIM in any mobile. To run the app, OTP will come on your mobile number and once the verification is complete, you can run the app even after removing the SIM. The Department of Telecommunications has made preparations to change this rule. The department believes that to maintain the identity of the users and to curb fraud or online fraud, there will be a ban on using WhatsApp without SIM. However, this will affect the users to a great extent, but it is considered necessary to take this step for security.
