Shams Mulani has made a habit of contributing with the bat when Mumbai needs him. Against Railways at the Brabourne Stadium, he once again scored another half-century to help Mumbai build a formidable position.
With the pitch gradually slowing down, batting was not easy, but Mulani showed patience. His partnership with Akash Anand was particularly important in taking the innings forward.
“We both played out the important first half an hour pretty well and capitalised on the loose balls as well,” Mulani said on Tuesday.
While his latest contribution with the bat was valuable, Mulani knows the bigger challenge lies ahead with the ball.
Brabourne has not offered the spinners much assistance, although the fast bowlers have created some rough that could come into play. “A lot of rough has been created, and we are trying to capitalise on that,” he said.
The challenge, however, is to remain patient. With the surface offering little margin for error, Mulani believes containing runs is as important as creating opportunities.
“We try to soak up the runs as much as possible so that the batter tries to play some different shots and tries to score runs against us. But we try to soak up the runs so that we create that pressure,” he said.
For him, the job is far from over.
