Apple’s iOS 27.3 Beta Brings Duo’s StandBy Faces and Sideways Reachability to Older iPhones — BigGo Finance

Apple seeded the first developer beta of iOS 27.3 on Tuesday, and the release packs more than the usual incremental polish: two features previously reserved for the iPhone Duo are now heading to older hardware, while the company’s new foldable continues to work through a rocky launch.

The most visible change is an expanded StandBy experience. StandBy, which Apple introduced with iOS 17, turns a horizontally placed, charging iPhone into a bedside-style smart display with clock, widget and photo views. The iPhone Duo shipped with a rebuilt version of that mode, adding new clock faces and deeper customization. With iOS 27.3, those redesigned Analog and Digital Clock faces will reach other iPhone models, along with new options for adjusting their colors and complications.

The update also adds Calendar and Weather faces and brings Shared Albums support to the Photos face, so users can pick which shared albums surface while the phone is docked. Owners of an iPhone 11 or later will additionally be able to create multiple versions of the same StandBy face, each with its own settings, and swipe between them.

The second Duo-specific feature going wider is Reachability. Early reviews of the device last month flagged that the unusually wide outer display made one-handed operation awkward; Apple said at the time that a software update would address the complaint. In iOS 27.3, that fix arrives, but it works differently from the version on other iPhones. Rather than shifting the interface down vertically, the Duo implementation moves content left or right after a short swipe along the edge of the screen, once the option is switched on under Settings, Accessibility, Reachability.

iOS 27.3 is currently limited to developers, with a public beta expected in the coming days. Apple has said the final build will reach all users next month, and mid-December is the most likely window.

The software push comes as the iPhone Duo’s retail picture has shifted quickly. According to Apple’s Korean online store, the 256GB model is now listed as available for same-day pickup in every color at all of the country’s Apple Stores, a sharp reversal from preorder week. When orders opened on Oct. 16, delivery estimates for every configuration slipped to Jan. 22 and in-store purchase was shown as unavailable. Even on the Oct. 23 launch day, buyers had to book appointments and queue before collecting their devices.

Apple has not announced any increase in production or reallocation of channel supply. Third-party retailers including Naver and Coupang are now shipping the phone the same day, and the secondhand market has flipped from scarcity premium to discount. Early listings sought 4.5 million won (approximately $3,300) for a 512GB unit that retails at 3.59 million won (approximately $2,700), a 910,000 won (approximately $680) markup aimed at buyers unwilling to wait. Today, unopened units are being offered at 100,000 to 200,000 won (approximately $74 to $150) below list, and many still fail to find buyers.

The swing has been attributed in part to quality complaints. Soon after launch, users in several markets reported screen damage at similar points on the internal foldable panel, a controversy dubbed “crack gate,” with some pointing to the hinge structure as the cause. Apple has acknowledged that “a small number of iPhone Duo units” have an issue affecting the inner display and is replacing affected devices at no charge, while stopping short of acknowledging a broad defect.

Software optimization has drawn scrutiny as well. Users have found interface elements that do not account for the foldable’s screen geometry, including a new control area in the stock gallery app that covers buttons, and many third-party apps have yet to take advantage of the wider canvas. Apple counters that “early user response to iPhone Duo has been very positive” and that developers are updating apps quickly to exploit the form factor, producing encouraging results.

For investors, the beta release is a reminder that Apple’s software cadence can extend the life of features across its installed base, a lever that supports services and upgrade cycles. The retail data, however, suggests demand for the Duo is normalizing faster than the preorder backlog implied, and that execution issues on a first-generation foldable can dent pricing power in secondary markets within weeks of launch.
