A big problem has come to light regarding Apple’s first foldable smartphone iPhone Duo. Within a few hours or days of using the phone, some users started noticing cracks on the internal screen of the device. Now Apple has also accepted this problem.
The company has advised affected customers to contact AppleCare and get a replacement unit. The defect in the screen of this phone, which costs around ₹ 3 lakh in India, has increased the concern of the customers.
Where is the crack coming from the screen of iPhone Duo?
Some customers using Apple iPhone Duo reported that cracks are visible near the hinge or folding part on the internal display of the phone. In the cases reported, a vertical line is visible on the screen above the hinge.
Additionally, some horizontal lines are visible on the right side of the fold, which meet at a point just below the middle of the screen. Early reviews of the phone also noted the lack of apps for the book-style display. However, the problem of cracks on the screen has become a more serious hardware concern.
What did Apple say?
Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman had earlier told that Apple is investigating this problem. At that time the company had not given clear instructions to its stores and customer service team regarding the further process.
Now Apple has accepted the problem and said that the internal screen of some iPhone Duo devices has been affected. According to the company, customers who experience display problems should contact AppleCare for replacement.
However, Apple has not yet clarified what is causing the cracks in the screen. The company also did not disclose the number of affected devices.
Screen repair may cost ₹ 1.5 lakh
If the screen of iPhone Duo gets damaged, the repair cost is also said to be very high. According to the report, if there is no active AppleCare+ plan, its display repair can cost around ₹ 1.5 lakh in India and $ 999 in the US. That means the repair cost can reach almost half of the total price of the phone.
In such a situation, the replacement option can be a relief for the affected customers. However, you will need to contact AppleCare for replacement eligibility and processing.
iFixit expressed doubt over the hinge mechanism
iFixit, a company that disassembles, tests and repairs devices, has analyzed the possible reason for the crack in the screen. According to him, the problem may be related to the hinge mechanism of the phone.
iFixit has feared that when the curved part of the screen comes in contact with the bar in the middle, the pressure may increase at a particular place. Due to this pressure, there may be a risk of crack in the same part of the screen. However, this is a possible reason at the moment, it has not been officially confirmed by Apple.
