The air filter of a car is the breathing pipe of the engine. It traps dust, dirt and small particles and sends clean air inside. A dirty filter reduces air flow, which reduces mileage, reduces engine power and increases fuel consumption. Not checking it periodically puts extra stress on the engine and increases the risk of expensive repairs in the long run.

In most cars, the air filter should be changed every 15,000 to 30,000 kilometers, but in dusty areas this period is reduced further. Regular checking not only increases the life of the engine but also improves the driving experience. By checking and replacing them properly, you can easily do this work yourself and save workshop expenses. Let us understand this process step-by-step.

Find the location of the air filter

In most cars the air filter is in a black plastic box under the bonnet. Open the bonnet and look at the large rectangular or round box near the engine. Clips, screws or rubber bands are attached to it. Find the exact location by looking at the diagram in the user manual. This may be a little hidden in some modern cars, so take the help of a flashlight.

Check filter condition

Open the box, take out the filter and look at it in good light. If it looks dark black, oily or full of dust, it is time for replacement. White or light brown color is a sign of cleanliness. Dust off by patting lightly, but if there is a lot of dirt then dusting is not enough. Rub with fingers to see if the inner layers are blocked. It is a good practice to perform these checks regularly at every oil change.

Choose the right air filter

Buy an OEM or good quality aftermarket filter as per your car’s model, make and year. Wrong size or cheap, substandard filter does not fit and can cause damage. Match the car specifications on the package. Paper or cotton filters are common. High-performance ones are a little more expensive but provide better airflow. Always choose seals and rubber edges in good condition so that air does not leak.

How to remove old filter

Carefully open the clips or screws of the box. Pull the filter straight up, do not jerk. Wipe the surrounding surface with a clean cloth so that new dust does not enter inside. Put the old filter in a plastic bag and throw it away. Also check that there is no residue or insects inside the box. If removed properly, the new filter sits easily.

How to install and test a new filter

Place the new filter in the same direction as the old one. Sew the edges well so that there is no gap. Close the box and tighten the clips or screws. Start the engine and listen for unusual noises. Feel the performance by driving a few kilometres. If the mileage and throttle response seem better, then the work was successful. Regular maintenance always keeps the engine healthy.
