Know what will change regarding the issue of 28 days recharge, 30 days validity and Voice-SMS-only plan.
Option to recharge on the same date every month! Big change for customers in TRAI’s new rules
Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has expressed happiness over the new rules related to recharge and Voice-SMS Only plan with 30 days validity for prepaid mobile users. TRAI has notified the Telecom Consumers Protection (13th Amendment) Regulations, 2026 on September 22. Under this, telecom companies will have to provide more flexible voice and SMS-only recharge options to the users.
Raghav Chadha posted it on social media platform X and called it ‘Good news’ for prepaid mobile users. He said that with the new rules, customers will get options like 30-day recharge plans, voice and SMS-only plans without data and options to meet basic calling needs in low budget.
Issue of 28 days recharge was raised in Parliament
Chadha said that many people had shared their concerns with him regarding the limited and low number of mobile recharge options. While raising this issue in the Parliament on March 11, 2026, he had questioned the recharge with validity of 28 days.
He said that there are 12 months in a year, but due to 28 days validity, customers may have to recharge 13 times in a year instead of 12. Now in the new rules, a provision has been made to provide Voice-SMS-only option with validity of 30 days and the option to be renewed on the same date every month.
Users without data will also get the option
Chadha also expressed happiness for those customers who do not need mobile data. Under the new rules, telecom companies will have to provide more variety of Voice and SMS-only Special Tariff Vouchers. This will also include options with validity of 30 days or less. According to TRAI, its purpose is to give low budget customers more options as per their needs.
Expressing his gratitude to the government and TRAI in his X post, Chadha said that he had raised the demand of more options and affordable recharge for customers in the Parliament. He called it a step taken towards consumer choice and convenience.
He further said that this shows that by raising issues related to the public in Parliament, further action can be taken on them. Chadha expressed hope that the everyday problems of the people will continue to be raised in the same way.
