China ends the issue of 'State of Hormuz'! More than 65% people are buying EVZoom

The demand for electric cars is continuously increasing in China.

Electric vehicles (NEVs) now account for more than 65 percent of car sales in China. According to the latest report by South China Morning Post, of the 1.54 million cars sold in China in August 2026, 65.2 percent were pure electric or plug-in hybrid. This breaks last month’s record of 65.1 percent. Due to increasing fuel prices, people are increasingly moving away from petrol and diesel cars. Sales of petrol cars fell 40 percent year-on-year, while the decline of electric vehicles was only 10 percent.

Less range anxiety, hundreds of new models and advanced technology have accelerated this change. At the same time, the total EV share in India is currently around 8-10 percent, in which two-wheelers and three-wheelers have a major contribution. This is even less in passenger cars. It is clear from the comparison of the two countries that China has gone far ahead of India in policy, infrastructure and manufacturing.

Pace of EV revolution in China

According to data from China Passenger Car Association, the share of new energy vehicles has consistently remained above 60 percent. Customers have now fully accepted the benefits of EV. The number of charging points has reached crores. Battery prices have fallen and local companies like BYD, Geely and Leapmotor dominate the market. The Iran crisis accelerated this shift by increasing oil prices. Despite the overall auto market being sluggish, the share of EVs is increasing as petrol cars are rapidly being left behind.

current situation of india

Total EV sales in India crossed 2.45 million units in FY 2026 and the share in total auto sales was about 8.3 percent. EV penetration in two-wheelers and three-wheelers is quite good, but in passenger cars it is only between 4 to 8 percent. Companies like Tata, Mahindra and MG are ahead, but the total volume is still small. Government schemes like PLI and state-level incentives have helped, yet charging infrastructure is limited and starting prices still remain high.

comparison of the two countries

Over the years, China has achieved a share of more than 60 percent by providing strong subsidies, battery manufacturing and building a domestic supply chain. India is still in the initial stage. Range anxiety has almost ended in China, whereas in India it is still a major hurdle. Global issues like Iran are pushing China towards EVs more rapidly, but the impact of fuel prices in India is slow.

If India focuses on charging network, battery production and cheap models, then the pace can be picked up in the next few years. Currently, China is the world’s largest EV market and India still has a lot of improvement to do.
