2026 Maruti Baleno vs Tata Altroz: Baleno and Altroz have been each other’s competitors for a long time in the premium hatchback segment of the country. The recently launched Baleno facelift in a new avatar has made this competition more interesting. Ex-showroom prices of the new Baleno start from Rs 5.99 lakh (Sigma Petrol Manual) to Rs 9.99 lakh (Alpha O AMT).

At the same time, the price of Tata Altroz starts from around Rs 6 lakh (Smart Petrol) and reaches Rs 10.75-10.90 lakh (top variant). Both the cars are available in almost the same price range, but there is a lot of difference in features, safety, engine options and mileage. If you are planning to buy a new car, then this comparison can make your decision easier. Let’s take a look at the design and engine-performance details of both.

Design Details

The front end has been significantly updated in the Baleno facelift. The larger grille, chrome slats, redesigned bumper, new fog lamp housing, shark fin antenna and chrome garnish on the front fender give it a fresh look. The rear design has not changed much. The dimensions are also the same. Its length is 3990 mm, wheelbase is 2520 mm.

The design of Altroz is modern, bold and muscular. 3D grille, sharp DRL and strong build quality give it a distinct identity. The Altroz is slightly wider (1755 mm) and taller (1523 mm), with a wheelbase of 2501 mm. Boot space in Altroz is 345 litres, while in Baleno it is 318 litres. Both are stylish, but the look of Altroz looks more premium and study.

Cabin and Comfort

The cabin of Baleno gives a premium feel. A 9-inch touchscreen, semi-digital cluster, ventilated front seats (top variant), cooled wireless charger, Clarion sound system and head-up display are available. Space is good and fit-finish is of Maruti standard. Dual 10.25 inch screens (infotainment + digital cluster) are available in Altroz in the top variant. The cabin space and build quality is solid. Rear AC vents, sunroof (in some variants) and a more solid feel give the Altroz an edge. Space is adequate in both, but the interior of Altroz feels more premium and robust.

Who is good in features?

Baleno facelift has features like Level 2 ADAS (Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking etc.), 360 degree camera, TPMS, ventilated seats and wireless charger. Sunroof and rear armrest are still missing. 360 degree camera, wireless charging, touchscreen, digital cluster and sunroof are available in some variants in Altroz. The Adas takes the Baleno ahead, while the Altroz has some attractive convenience features and screen size.

Who has more number in safety?

This is the biggest plus point of Altroz. Altroz has received 5 star rating in Bharat NCAP. 6 airbags, ESC, ISOFIX are standard in all variants. Baleno also has 6 airbags, ESC, hill hold assist as standard and the top variant gets level 2 ADAS with 360 degree camera. Bharat NCAP rating of Baleno is around 4 stars. For buyers who prioritize safety, the Altroz is a clear winner.

Engine and Mileage

Baleno has a new 1.2 liter 3-cylinder Z12E petrol engine, which produces 83 hp and 112 Nm torque. 5-speed manual or AMT available. CNG has 70 HP/102 Nm. ARAI claimed mileage is 23.80 km/l in petrol manual, 24.77 km/l in AMT and 33.61 km/kg in CNG.

Altroz has 1.2 liter Revotron petrol (88 hp/115 Nm), 1.5 liter diesel (90 hp/200 Nm) and CNG (approximately 72-74 hp) options. Transmission options include manual, AMT and DCT. Mileage ranges from 19.33 km/litre in petrol, 23.64 km/litre in diesel and around 26.2-27.8 km/kg in CNG. Baleno is better in mileage and city driving, while Altroz is ahead in power and diesel options.

Who to buy?

Overall, if mileage, features (especially ADAS) and service network are priorities, then the new Baleno is a better choice. Altroz can be chosen for safety, build quality, engine option (diesel) and premium feel. Both cars are good depending on budget, needs and priorities. Before buying, definitely take a test drive of both.
