Creamy hues of ecru and taupe, soft pistachio tones, buttery yellows, and playful interventions of dusty blues — this apartment in Thane is a veritable masterclass in monotones, spanning 3,000 square feet. Jasem Pirani and Huzefa Rangwala of MuseLAB worked with a clear brief: their clients, a couple with two sons, wanted a light, neutral palette that felt calm and cohesive without, however, feeling prosaic.
Thus began the process of working with a rich mood board of texture and material, adding visual interest through sculptural forms, and playing with light and shadow, all while keeping a sleek, tone-on-tone sensibility. “It was not easy to develop a palette that sits within a narrow tonal range and still feels layered. On a mood board, everything can start to look flat,” the designers say. “We worked with a very light veneer — almost white — which complemented the tone-on-tone material palette of beiges and warm ivories. Every surface had to feel quiet and refined, without sudden contrast or disruption. Material transitions became more important than contrast. This helped bring in variation without stepping outside the brief.”
