Maruti Suzuki has crossed the figure of 1 lakh car exports to Japan.
Maruti Suzuki has achieved a historic achievement in the automobile sector. The total exports of the company’s made-in-India Jimny 5-door, FrontX and E Vitara models to Japan have crossed the figure of one lakh units. This achievement is considered even more important in view of the extremely tough competition in the Japanese automotive market. Japan has now become the second largest export market of Maruti Suzuki, which proves India’s manufacturing capabilities at the international level. The Jimny 5-Door and e Vitara are completely manufactured in India, making the country an important base in Suzuki’s global production network.
Export of the FrontX model started in August 2024. After this, Jimny 5-door reached Japan in December 2024 and in September 2025, the company’s first battery electric vehicle E Vitara was also included in the export portfolio. The success of these three models has not only strengthened the export figures of the company, but has also given a new height to the India-Japan economic partnership. Japanese customers have expressed confidence in the company by adopting Indian made vehicles. This milestone is a matter of pride for the Indian auto industry and opens the door to more export possibilities in the future.
Japan becomes the second largest export market
Due to the increasing popularity and acceptance of made-in-India models, Japan became the second largest export destination for Maruti Suzuki in the financial year 2025-26. This situation continued in the period from April to August 2026-27 also. Sustained demand for the Jimny 5-Door, Frontex and E Vitara played a key role in making Suzuki Motor Corporation the No. 1 vehicle importer in Japan.
According to Maruti Suzuki, during the financial year 2025-26, the share of the company’s vehicles in Suzuki’s total vehicle imports into Japan was almost 100 percent. This figure makes it clear how well the vehicles being sent to Japan from Indian production units are getting acceptance in the local market. The successful performance of Indian cars in a market that is extremely sensitive in terms of quality and technology like Japan shows the maturity of India’s auto sector.
the road so far
The Fronx first entered the Japanese market in August 2024. A few months later, in December 2024, the export of Jimny 5-door started. The company’s first electric car e-Vitara joined the export list in September 2025. The Jimny 5-Door and e Vitara are manufactured entirely in India, establishing the country as a strong manufacturing hub in Suzuki’s global operations. These vehicles not only met Japanese standards in terms of design and performance but were also successful in attracting customers in terms of price and features.
CEO’s statement and India-Japan partnership
Commenting on this achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, said that this is a strong testament to India’s manufacturing capabilities. He also underlined the importance of India-Japan partnership. According to him, the adoption of vehicles produced in India by Japanese customers reflects the deep economic ties between the two countries.
Maruti Suzuki is continuously increasing its international expansion. The company is now supplying vehicles to approximately 120 countries through Suzuki’s global network. Between April and August 2026, the company exported more than 1.8 lakh units. Maruti Suzuki has continuously remained India’s number-1 passenger vehicle exporter from the financial year 2021-22 to 2025-26. According to the company, it holds more than 50 percent share in the country’s total passenger vehicle exports.
