However, the Rama Atray tournament for women cricketers will continue and its seventh edition will get underway later this month in Chandigarh.

The JP Atray tournament is a BCCI-recognised event and held under the aegis of the Punjab Cricket Association across venues like Mohali, Chandigarh and Panchkula. It is played in the 50-over format and has often been a crucial preparatory opportunity ahead of the domestic season for several players.

The tournament also had considerable corporate interest. Nita Ambani’s Reliance has also fielded a side which had marquee players like Virender Sehwag.

The tournament has historically been a star-studded affair, with the likes of Kapil Dev, Yashpal Sharma, Saurav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh , Harbhajan Singh, Ravinder Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Irfan Pathan, Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya among the India internationals who have featured in it. Many Indian cricket stars routinely featured in the tournament even after breaking into the Indian national side.

A packed annual cricketing calendar and the unavailability of top players has contributed to the end of the JP Atray tournament. The surge of T20 cricket and state leagues has plugged available gaps in player schedules and placed strains on ground availability as well.

“The Atray family wishes to thank all those who have contributed to the tournament’s extraordinary success over the decades. All cricket associations, especially BCCI and PCA, along with our organisers led by founder Organising Secretary Capt Sushil Kapoor, and all the players, sponsors, coaches, umpires, scorers, managers, ground staff, etc. deserve our gratitude. ,” the tournament committee said in a statement announcing the development.
