If the electricity bill is high despite using 5-Star AC and energy efficient refrigerator, then changing some small habits can be beneficial. Keeping the temperature of AC at 24 degrees, setting the correct temperature of the refrigerator and stopping power consumption in standby mode can help in this.
Are you troubled by electricity bill every month? Be sure to check the temperature of AC and these settings of refrigerator.
In many houses, despite installing 5-star AC and energy efficient refrigerator, the electricity bill becomes huge. People think that by installing expensive and star rated appliances the bills will automatically reduce. But in reality, small settings can reduce the bill significantly. If you pay attention to these three easy settings, you can save thousands of rupees every month.
Always run AC at 24 degrees
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) recommends running the AC at 24 degrees Celsius. Most people keep the AC at 18 or 20 degrees to cool the room quickly. But there is no benefit from this. The AC compressor runs for a longer time and electricity consumption increases.
For every one degree increase in temperature, about 6 percent electricity is saved. This means that by keeping it at 24 degrees instead of 18 degrees, there can be savings of 20-30 percent. The room remains comfortable at 24 degrees and the AC also works less hard. Use sleep mode or eco mode at night. This increases the temperature slowly and provides additional savings.
Keep the refrigerator thermostat at the right setting
Refrigerator is also a big consumer of electricity. Many people keep the fridge colder than necessary. The correct setting is that the temperature of the fridge compartment should be between 3 to 5 degrees Celsius and that of the freezer should be between 15 to -18 degrees. This keeps food safe and also consumes less electricity.
Keeping the thermostat too low causes the compressor to start repeatedly. Do not open the refrigerator door frequently and do not keep hot food inside. Keep the refrigerator a little away from the wall so that air circulation remains proper. These small things also affect the bill.
Stop power consumption in standby mode
AC, fridge, TV, charger and other appliances keep consuming electricity even in standby mode. This is called Phantom Power or Vampire Power. Extra units are spent every month due to the appliance remaining plugged in even after switching it off from the remote.
Switch off the main switch or MCB of the AC. Except the refrigerator, unplug or switch off all other appliances. You can also use smart plugs which cut off standby power. Hundreds of rupees can be saved annually just by this habit.
Adopting these three settings does not require any special effort or expense. If you take care of temperature and standby with 5-star AC and a good fridge, then the electricity bill can be controlled to a great extent. You will feel the difference next time the bill comes. Small habits bring big savings. Adopt these settings from today itself and save electricity.
