Adam Gilchrist is back in the news, this time for reasons you wouldn’t expect. Today, it is because of a 17-year-old wicketkeeper called Adam Gilchrist from Karachi, also left-handed like his namesake.
Like the Australian great, he smashed a century with great aplomb in the U-17 PCB Talent Hunt School Cricket Championships. He scored 117 from just 108 balls and scored around 40 per cent of his team’s runs as they, Kamran Public School, beat Happy Place Grammar School Karachi by 172 runs.

The Pakistan Cricket Board tournament brings together schools from over 100 districts, and over 1,200 schools are participating. Gilchrist himself thinks this is a good opportunity for U-15 and U-17 cricketers to show their talent and hopefully reach professional cricket.
Interestingly, after his mum named him Adam, his dad, a big cricket fan, decided to add Gilchrist to his name. Funnily, however, Adam Gilchrist said that his role model in cricket is Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and not his namesake, who achieved so much in world cricket.
