New rule on Smartphone Screen Protector, BIS certification required from 2027.
The Central Government has brought smartphone screen protectors under the purview of mandatory BIS certification. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has amended the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 by issuing a notification on 21 September 2026. Now screen protectors have been added to the schedule as serial number 66. These must comply with the Indian Standard IS 19348:2025 (Glass Screen Protector – Specification).
These rules will be effective from April 1, 2027. Before this, manufacturers and importers will get time to conform to the product quality standards. The market is full of cheap and inferior protectors. The new rule will give customers an opportunity to buy smartphone screen protectors with better safety and quality. With this, domestic manufacturing will also increase. This step is important towards strengthening Make in India and quality control.
What is the new rule?
According to the notification, screen protectors for smartphones now come under the compulsory registration scheme. It will be mandatory for the product to comply with IS 19348:2025 standard. These standards cover the specifications of glass screen protectors such as thickness, dimensions, strength, adhesive layer, anti-shatter film, oleophobic coating, anti-glare and privacy film. It not only decides the fitting but also decides the quality and testing standards of the glass.
When will the rule come into effect?
The rule will be effective from April 1, 2027. There is a transition period of approximately seven months from September 2026 to April 2027. During this period, manufacturers and importers can complete registration by getting tested in a BIS accredited lab.
What will be the impact on buyers?
The guarantee of consumers getting quality screen protectors will increase. Substandard and unbranded imported goods may be less. This may increase prices slightly and affect availability, but in the long run you will get safe and durable products. Currently most of the supply in the market comes from imported and unorganized sector.
What does it mean for manufacturers and importers?
They have to make the product as per Indian standards. Without BIS certification, sales will become illegal after April 1, 2027. This will encourage domestic production and reduce dependence on imports. Some companies are already planning capacity expansion.
Why is this step necessary?
Smartphone displays are quite expensive and sensitive. A poor quality protector can easily break or damage the display. The new standard phone screen will be safer. This is big news for the country’s electronics accessories market.
