Apple brings touch to the MacBook Pro after years of resistance

Apple has unveiled its first touchscreen MacBook Pro in Cupertino, California, ending a 16-year position on how people should interact with a laptop. Announced on October 28th, 2026, the new 14- and 16-inch models allow users to work directly on the display, reaching past the keyboard and trackpad to manipulate content with their fingers. It is a familiar gesture on an iPhone, though one Apple has long resisted bringing to the Mac.

Back in 2010, Steve Jobs argued that vertical touch surfaces were uncomfortable to use for extended periods. Speaking at Apple’s Back to the Mac event, he joked that eventually ‘your arm wants to fall off,’ explaining why the company had concentrated its efforts on developing multi-touch trackpads instead. For Jobs, the horizontal surface offered a more comfortable way to interact with a computer.

Apple maintained this thinking for years. In 2018, software chief Craig Federighi again questioned the ergonomics of reaching toward a laptop screen, suggesting that the existing trackpad offered a better experience. With the new MacBook Pro, the company has revisited that position, introducing touch as an additional way to work while retaining the familiar laptop configuration.

designers can now work directly on the screen

For designers and artists, the change opens up some interesting possibilities. Graphic designers can draw directly onto their work in Pixelmator Pro, while 3D artists can interact with digital models using their fingers. Photographs can be enlarged with a pinch, and windows can be moved across the desktop with a swipe. The screen itself becomes another working surface, allowing certain tasks to move beyond the trackpad.

Apple has integrated the touch sensor directly into its new OLED panel, reducing the distance between a finger and the content beneath it. The hinge has also been redesigned to provide greater stability when the screen is pressed. Meanwhile, macOS 27 translates touches into mouse clicks in existing applications, allowing much of the current software library to respond to the new interaction.

The MacBook Pro still operates as a conventional laptop, with a fixed screen and the familiar keyboard below. Apple Pencil support is absent, and the device has no convertible tablet mode. Touch instead joins the existing controls, allowing users to move between methods depending on what they are doing. For creative work, that could mean switching from precise cursor movements to directly adjusting something on screen.

a brighter OLED display changes the visual experience

The touchscreen arrives alongside Apple’s new PROLED XDR display, which uses two layers of light-emitting pixels to produce deeper blacks and brighter images. The screen reaches up to 2,000 nits of brightness, according to Apple, and supports both P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces. These capabilities are particularly relevant for photographers and graphic designers working across digital and printed media.

Another familiar feature has made its way over from the iPhone. Apple’s Dynamic Island now sits at the top of the MacBook display, replacing the previous camera notch with an interactive area for notifications and controls. Music playback and incoming calls can be accessed from this small section of the screen, which expands and changes according to the activity.

The physical design has also been slimmed down, with the 14-inch model now weighing 3 pounds and the 16-inch version weighing 4 pounds. Narrower screen borders create more room for the display, while a revised cooling system accommodates the smaller enclosure. Despite these changes, the overall silhouette remains recognizably MacBook Pro.

apple’s illuminated logo returns after a decade

There is also a small return to Apple’s earlier laptop designs. The illuminated Apple logo, removed from the MacBook Pro in 2016, is back on the rear of the display. For years, the glowing mark was one of the most recognizable features of Apple’s portable computers. Its reappearance brings a familiar detail to a machine introducing one of the company’s biggest changes in laptop interaction.

Inside, the new models use Apple’s M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, with battery life rated at up to 24 hours. The technical upgrades extend across processing power and storage capacity, though the most immediately visible changes concern the display and the ways people can interact with it.
