BS-7 will be implemented in phases.

New Delhi. The central government is preparing to bring new emission standard Bharat Stage-7 (BS-7) to control pollution in the country. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a draft of amendment to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. It has been told that it has been proposed to implement BS-7 rules for passenger vehicles from April 1, 2029. The ministry has sought suggestions on this from the public and industry within 30 days. Till now, in the emission standards of vehicles, only the smoke coming out of the silencer was considered, but in BS-7 the scope of the rules has been widened considerably.

The BS-7 norms are proposed to be implemented in three different phases, April 2029, April 2031 and April 2035, for the convenience of the automobile industry. The first phase will include physical monitoring of exhaust emissions, fuel and power consumption and regulations related to battery life. Before this phase is implemented, vehicle manufacturing companies will get enough time to update their technology.

Monitoring of brakes and tires also

BS-7 will be implemented in phases. The first phase will be implemented from April 1, 2029 and the second from April 2031. In the second phase, limits will also be set on fine particles emitted during braking and micro pollution caused by tire wear. In the third phase starting from April 2035, uniform limit of particles emitted from brakes will be applicable for all types of vehicles.

Battery will have to be made stronger for EV and hybrid cars

To protect the interests of buyers of electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles, the government has proposed to set strict standards for battery durability. Under this, companies will have to ensure that after running for 5 years or 1 lakh kilometers, at least 75 percent of the battery capacity remains. Even after driving for 8 years or 1.6 lakh kilometers, the battery health should remain at least 67 percent.

Environment passport will be available with the vehicle

According to the new proposal, emissions will now be tested in real-world driving conditions on the roads instead of lab tests. For this, real-time monitoring systems will be installed in the vehicles. Also, car buyers will be given an Environmental Vehicle Passport, in which complete information about the vehicle’s actual emissions, mileage/power consumption and the exact condition of the battery will be recorded.

Apart from this, there will be an option of geofencing technology based ‘BS-7-G’ category in petrol-diesel vehicles and it will be mandatory to clearly mention it on vehicles supporting fuel with more than 20% ethanol blending (E20+).
