Karnataka batter Smaran Ravichandran scored his eighth first-class century against Andhra Pradesh on Day 1 of the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 season on Sunday.

Smaran also became one of few batters in Ranji history to score a century on captaincy debut. The southpaw’s innings was a captain’s knock in every sense.

Smaran came into bat when Karnataka was reeling at 22/4, after KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, and Karun Nair were all dismissed cheaply.

From there, Smaran single-handedly helped Karnataka cross 250 while wickets kept falling around him.

The 23-year-old is batting on 109* and Karnataka will hope he can convert it into a double hundred. Last season, Smaran was the highest run-getter in the tournament, scoring 950 runs from 14 innings at an average of 86.36, including four centuries.

Most recently, Smaran scored a century to help Rest of India defeat Jammu and Kashmir from a losing position and lift the Irani Cup.
