Mahindra is planning to launch a new compact SUV in the Indian market. We are talking about Mahindra Vision S. It has again been spotted testing in a production-ready avatar. Production-ready headlamps and front design are clearly visible in the recent spy shots, which seems to indicate that the company is moving fast in preparation for the launch. This SUV will be based on Mahindra’s new Freedom_NU platform, which supports petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains. Vision S will be positioned between XUV3XO and Scorpio. It will be a sub-4 meter length SUV with a boxy and rugged look, whose high driving position and good ground clearance will give off-road feel.
The concept mentioned 277 mm ground clearance and 2665 mm wheelbase, which can be almost retained in the production model as well. At the rear, the presence of the spare wheel mounted on the tailgate further strengthens its rugged character. Mahindra had unveiled the Vision Concepts in 2025 and the Vision S is the first of these to go into production in 2027. The diesel engine has been confirmed by the presence of AdBlue filler cap in testing. Its entry in the market is expected to create a new stir in the compact SUV segment, because it can offer a good balance of space, features and mileage.
Design and interior
The expected design is boxy and muscular, with square LED headlamps, vertical DRLs and fog lamps, a wide grille and strong body cladding. At the rear, the tailgate with inverted L-shaped tail lamp and spare wheel will look like a Mini Defender. The interior is expected to have dual digital screens, protruding AC vents, physical shortcut buttons, three-spoke steering and panoramic sunroof. The cabin will be spacious with 60:40 split rear seat, flat floor and good boot space.
Features and safety
Features may include large touchscreen infotainment, wireless connectivity, connected car technology, cruise control and advanced options in higher variants. In safety, multiple airbags, level-2 ADS, 360 degree camera and strong body structure are expected, which can give good NCAP rating.
Engine and Mileage
The main engine options will be 1.2 liter turbo petrol and 1.5 liter diesel (manual and automatic). Hybrid and EV variants may also come later. Mileage is estimated to be around 16-18 km per liter in petrol and 20-22 km per liter in diesel. Its starting price will likely be less than ₹ 10 lakh and can go up to ₹ 17-22 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top spec variant. When launched in 2027, it can prove to be a strong player for Mahindra.
