Volvo has launched long-range plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of its popular SUVs XC60 and XC90, achieving a new milestone in electric range. The XC60 offers a pure electric range of up to 200 km according to WLTP, while the larger XC90 reaches 160-164 km. This is more than two and a half times compared to the previous model. Both models have a large 41.2 kWh (37.9 kWh usable) battery integrated into the floor, enabling most everyday trips to be completed without a petrol engine.

According to Volvo, this will act as a strong bridge towards complete electrification. The Orders have started in select markets and production will begin later this year. Availability in India is expected to be confirmed later. Let’s take a look at the details from their design to powertrain and performance.

Design and interior

XC60 has received exterior updates. This includes a new grille, bonnet, front wings, revised Thor Hammer matrix LED headlights, updated rear lights, tailgate and rear bumper. The new wheel design (20-21 inches) and new color options like Heather Bronze have made the look smarter. The XC90 has not received any major exterior changes after the 2024 facelift, but it is already present in premium and bold styling. Both models will also be available in Black Edition.

The cabin of the XC60 gets a new dashboard, door panel design, wood trim and Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather. Indirect ambient lighting creates a serene Scandinavian atmosphere. The 11.2-inch portrait touchscreen runs the new user interface. The XC90’s interior is already spacious and premium, with a seven-seater layout and an optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Both retain high-quality materials and comfortable seating.

Features and safety

Both models get Google Gemini AI voice assistant, over-the-air software updates and 360-degree camera (with 3D view). The XC60 comes with lane change assist and advanced driver assistance systems. The infotainment system is more intuitive and works with fewer taps.

The XC60 gets an upgraded sensor suite (additional radar, cameras and ultrasonic sensors). This includes automatic emergency steering and braking, cyclist door alert and collision prevention system. The XC90 also meets Volvo’s high security standards and is equipped with these features.

Powertrain and performance

Both have a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a more powerful electric motor (about 130 kW). The battery is floor-integrated. The XC60 is available with T6 Long Range (combined 357 hp, 0-100 km/h 5.7 sec, 200 km EV range) and T8 (461 hp, 4.8 sec, 189 km range). The XC90 comes primarily with the T8 (about 455 hp, 0-100 km/h 5.0-5.2 seconds, 160-164 km EV range). Top speed is 180 km/hr. On full charge and full tank, XC60 can give a total range of 1200+ km and XC90 can give a total range of up to 1000+ km. Full charge on home charger takes about 4 hours. Mild-hybrid versions will also be available.

These long-range PHEVs make Volvo’s best-selling SUV more attractive. With most of the daily driving being possible in electric mode, the benefit of fuel savings and low emissions will be achieved, while the petrol engine will be the backup for long trips. Overall, these are strong options in the premium SUV segment.
