The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Friday dismissed Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam of the School of Social Sciences following an inquiry by the university’s internal committee into allegations of sexual harassment.

Akoijam is also the Congress Lok Sabha MP from Inner Manipur. Officials said that around 10-12 students from the Centre for Study of Social Systems had filed a sexual harassment complaint against him.

An order by Vice Chancellor Santishree D Pandit stated: “Whereas, an inquiry was conducted by the Internal Committee (IC) against Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam of Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, pursuant to allegations of sexual harassment… and based on the findings, the Internal Committee (IC) recommended major punishment to Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, as per service rules… and by invoking Rule 11(ix) of Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules.”

She said that upon following the due process and considering all available facts and as per the report of the internal committee, “the punishment of dismissal from the services of the University is hereby imposed on Professor  Akoijam” with immediate effect.

Raising the matter last month, the ABVP staged a protest against the professor and demanded his suspension and dismissal from service.

Following his dismissal Friday, the ABVP, in a statement, said, “In this case, 11 female students had filed complaints of sexual harassment against the Congress MP. After considering the Internal Committee’s report and the available facts, the university dismissed him from service.”

ABVP JNU secretary, Praveen Kumar Piyush, said, “ABVP JNU has consistently fought for the safety and justice of female students. Our position is clear: no one’s political position or influence should stand in the way of impartial action. The university administration must continue to ensure accountability so that female students receive justice, safety, and dignity. The dismissal of the Congress Lok Sabha MP from university service is not enough; strict legal action must be taken against him, and he must be sent to jail.”

In a post on X, BJP national general secretary Smriti Irani said, “The so-called ‘Smash the Patriarchy’ brigade of the Congress ecosystem stands completely exposed. Will it demand accountability from its MP, Bimol Akoijam over serious sexual harassment complaints, or will the brigade go conspicuously silent just because it’s convenient?…”
