Scientists have developed a unique soft robot. This robot can crawl into the human intestines like a snake or earthworm. This robot named ‘Biocentre’ can go into the narrow parts of the intestines and take pictures. Along with this, it is capable of delivering medicine directly to the affected area and taking tissue samples for biopsy. This technology will make the diagnosis of intestinal cancer easier.

Engineers from America’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a surprising robot. This soft robot can move by crawling in the intestines of the human body like a snake or earthworm. Scientists have named this robot ‘BIOCENTER’. This device can enter inside the most narrow and complex parts of the stomach by making its own path. The complete report of this new invention has been published in the prestigious science journal ‘Science Robotics’. At present, the procedures for examining the intestines prove to be quite painful and complicated for the patients.
This robot can enter the patient’s body through the mouth or anus and reach the small intestine directly. After reaching there, it can accurately identify diseases as well as extract samples for biopsy.
Why is it so difficult for doctors to examine the small intestine?
The gastrointestinal tract i.e. digestive system of the human body is a very narrow and winding path. The human small intestine is approximately 20 to 25 feet long. It remains wrapped in many layers in a very narrow space in the lower part of the stomach.
The stomach and large intestine are present on both sides of it, due to which it is difficult for conventional cameras to reach here. Problems of bleeding, tumors, wounds or blockage in the small intestine are becoming common. If not detected on time, this problem takes the form of fatal cancer.
At present, ‘double-balloon enteroscopy’ technique is used to examine this part. In this process, the doctor pushes the camera forward by alternately inflating and deflating two balloons. This method is very slow and doctors have to continuously work with their hands.
How did scientists prepare this robot by taking inspiration from the movement of a snake?
Engineers deeply studied the way snakes move to design this robot. Snakes alternately contract and expand the muscles on both sides of their body. Apart from this, the scales or layers present on the snake’s skin give it grip to move on slippery surfaces.
