Kia Sorento vs Toyota Fortuner: Fortuner has long dominated the premium full-size SUV segment in the Indian car market. Now Sorento has entered to compete with it. Its starting ex-showroom price starts from Rs 27.99 lakh for diesel engine and Rs 29.49 lakh for hybrid, the top variant goes up to Rs 40.39 lakh. At the same time, the price of Toyota Fortuner starts from around Rs 34.76 lakh (petrol base) and reaches Rs 50.46 lakh in the top 4×4 GR-S variant.
The Sorento is clearly cheaper in price and brings a modern approach to features-safety, while the Fortuner is known for its body-on-frame strength, off-road capability and strong resale value. Both come in seven-seater option. However, Sorento also has a 6-seater option. In some cases the focus of both is different. In such a situation, let us know what are the differences between the two and which SUV can be better for you?
Design and dimensions
Sorento comes with modern and sharp look. It has a length of 4,815 mm, width of 1,900 mm and a wheelbase of 2,815 mm, which is slightly larger and wider than the Fortuner (4,795 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, 2,745 mm wheelbase). The Fortuner is ahead in height (by about 1,835 mm), giving it a more commanding road presence. The Sorento comes with a tiger-nose grille, vertical LED DRLs, ice-cube headlamps and 19-inch alloy wheels. The design of the Fortuner has been slightly updated with time, but still has the traditional boxy and tough look. The Sorento looks more attractive and premium in the city, while the Fortuner shows its strong presence off-road and on the highway.
Cabin and Comfort
The cabin of the Sorento is clearly more modern and feature-loaded. Features like dual 12.3-inch curved screen (infotainment + digital cluster), Bose 12-speaker sound system, ventilated front and second-row seats, panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, digital IRVM and AI assistant are available. Captain seats are available in the six-seater option, which increases comfort. Due to longer wheelbase, the third row is also relatively better.
The Fortuner’s interior is durable and spacious, but it lags behind in technology. Generally, 8-inch touchscreen, basic instrument cluster and front ventilated seats are available in its higher variants. The second row slides-reclines, but there is no ventilation. The Fortuner’s boot and overall utility is strong, but the Sorento is ahead in premium feel and comfort.
Features and safety
Sorento offers a ton of features. OTA updates, digital key, wireless charger, 360-degree camera, remote parking assist, head-up display and multiple drive/train modes (including snow, sand, mud) make it special. AWD option is available in both hybrid and diesel. The Fortuner has basic but reliable features. It can be purchased with cruise control, rear camera, parking sensor and some advanced options in higher variants. Overall, Sorento seems to be one or two generations ahead in technology and convenience.
Sorento is a clear winner in safety. It has 10 airbags, Level 2+ ADAS (about 29-30 features like adaptive cruise, lane keep assist, blind spot monitor, auto emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert), 360-degree camera, TPMS and multi-collision braking. The Fortuner has 7 airbags, VSC, hill assist, traction control and basic safety kit. ADAS is not in Fortuner. Both have strong structures, but Sorento goes far ahead in active safety.
Engine and Performance
The Sorento comes with two engine options – 2.2-litre diesel (approximately 190-193 PS, 442 Nm) with 8-speed DCT and 1.6-litre turbo petrol Strong Hybrid (engine 180 PS + motor 65 PS, total output) mated to 6-speed AT. Both have FWD/AWD and train modes, but no low-range transfer case.
The Fortuner is available in 2.7-litre petrol (around 164-166 PS, 245 Nm) and 2.8-litre diesel (around 201-204 PS, up to 500 Nm). It can be bought with manual/automatic and 4×2/4×4. The diesel has low-range and a locking differential, which is better for true off-roading. The Fortuner is ahead in torque, while the Sorento Hybrid will be smoother, more refined and potentially give better mileage. The Sorento is comfortable in the city and on the highway. The Fortuner will prove to be strong in heavy off-road and long distance use.
Who is better: If you want modern features, better safety, premium interior and savings in price, then Kia Sorento is a better option. If ruggedness, true 4×4 capability, longevity and resale value are priorities, the Toyota Fortuner is still king. Decide based on budget, use-case and test drive. Both are strong in their place.
