India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella were involved in a funny altercation on the fifth day of the first Test between the two teams at the Galle International Stadium on Wednesday.
After losing four wickets on the fourth day, a 95-run stand for the fifth-wicket between Sonal Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva had restored hope that the host could stretch the contest and force a draw.
However, after the captain fell, Dickwella came into bat, with India expecting him to emulate his fluent stroke play from the first innings.
Jaiswal, stationed at square leg, attempted to sledge the Sri Lanka batter, provoking him to attack.
“Come on, there was a lot of shots in first innings. We need to see something, come on. Hit him there (pointing towards deep square leg),” Jaiswal was heard on the broadcast mics.
Dickwella retored by saying, “No requirement. Take me (to) IPL, then I’ll hit.” Provoking the batter further, Jaiswal moved in closer to the square and replied, “We will. Hit him for a six, I’ll take you to the IPL.”
The exchange led to a lapse in concentration from Dickwella.
In the same over, being bowled by Prasidh Krishna, Dickwella tried to make room and slash the pacer through the off-side, in processing handing an edge to Rishabh Pant behind the wickets. He was dismissed for 10 off 17 balls.
Sri Lanka eventually could not drag on the game and lost by 165 runs.
