Nowadays, while buying a car, dealers often offer underbody anti-rust coating. The question arises that even though modern cars have factory-installed protections like galvanized steel, e-coating and seam sealer, should additional coatings be done or not? The answer completely depends on your location, age of the car, road conditions and how many years you plan to keep the car.

This protection can prove beneficial in coastal areas, areas with heavy rainfall or in old cars, whereas in dry cities it can become an unnecessary expense on a new car. Coating applied without proper preparation can trap moisture and increase corrosion. Therefore, take the decision thoughtfully. Let us know what is anti-rust coating and should it be done or not? If it should be done then who should get it done and if it should not be done then who should not…

What is anti-rust coating?

It is a protective layer that is applied on the underbody, wheel arches and chassis of the car. Rubberized, wax, oil-based or polyurethane types are available. Rubberized coating is most popular in India, as it is flexible and also reduces road noise.

When is it beneficial to get it done?

Salty air in coastal cities (Mumbai, Chennai, Goa) intensifies corrosion. Water logging during monsoon and mud and stones on rural roads also cause harm. Coating is useful if the car is older than 5 years or if you plan to keep it for a long time. Factory protection on a new car is usually sufficient for 8-12 years, especially in dry areas.

Main advantages

Provides protection from corrosion, which keeps the chassis, brake lines and suspension strong for a long time. Road noise is reduced. In the long run, repair costs are saved and resale value remains better. Properly applied coating lasts for 3-5 years (2-3 years in coastal areas).

Potential harm and precautions

Poor application can trap moisture inside and accelerate corrosion. Never apply coating over existing rust. Some coatings have to be reapplied annually. The cost can range from ₹2,500-4,000 for hatchbacks and ₹4,500-9,000 for SUVs. This often proves to be an additional expense on a new car in mild climates.

How to get it done correctly?

Get this work done by a professional workshop only on clean, dry and rust-free surface. Pressure washing and degreasing are necessary. Check warranty and do regular underbody wash. This investment is beneficial if the plan is to keep it for a long time and the terrain is harsh, otherwise one can rely on factory safety.
