Mahindra Thar OG vs Maruti Suzuki Jimny: In the off-roading and lifestyle SUV segment, both Thar OG and Jimny hold a special place in the Indian market. Thar OG is the recently launched updated three-door version, which carries forward the legacy of the old Thar with new technology, more power and better safety. Its price starts from Rs 10.32 lakh and goes up to Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Whereas Jimny is a 5-door compact off-roader, which comes with ease of daily use and standard 4WD system. Its price is between Rs 12.59 lakh to Rs 14.67 lakh.
Both vehicles are built on ladder-frame chassis and emphasize off-road capability, but there is a difference in their approach. The Thar OG offers more powerful engine options, a wider body and stronger road presence, while the Jimny proves to be practical from city to trail with its smaller size, easy rear access and lighter weight. This comparison is important for those buyers who want to choose between the two.
Design and dimensions
The design of Thar OG is boxy and muscular. The new grille, C-shaped LED DRL, updated bumper and 19-inch alloy wheels in the top variant make it more attractive. It is approximately 3995 mm long, 1870 mm wide and 1855 mm high, ground clearance is around 226-232 mm. Jimny is more compact and classic looking. Comes with round headlights, five-slat grille and rear spare wheel.
Its length is also about 3985 mm, but width is only 1645 mm and height is 1720 mm. The wheelbase of the Jimny is longer (2590 mm), which provides better rear space. The wider body of the Thar looks more dominant on the road, while the Jimny is easier on narrow city roads and tight trails.
Cabin and Comfort
Mahindra Thar OG gets truffle brown leather upholstery, rear AC vents and a 10.25-inch touchscreen (in higher variants). The cabin is more spacious and feature-rich. The Jimny’s cabin is black and functional, with a 9-inch screen, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and automatic climate control. Rear seat access is easy due to five doors, but the space seems a little less compared to the Thar.
Features and safety
Both have 6 airbags, ESP, hill hold and hill descent control. Thar OG offers wireless charger, rear camera, front parking sensors and all-disc brakes in the top variant. Jimny has standard 6 airbags, rear camera and auto headlamps. The Thar has more premium features, while the Jimny offers a better safety package than the base one.
Engine and Performance
Thar OG comes with three engine options – 1.5L diesel (approximately 119 hp, 300 Nm), 2.2L diesel (152 hp, 330 Nm) and 2.0L turbo petrol (162 hp, 330 Nm). It can be purchased with 6-speed manual/automatic and RWD/4WD options. The Jimny comes only with a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol (approx. 105 hp, 134 Nm) engine with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto and standard 4WD (AllGrip Pro). Thar is far ahead in power and torque, while Jimny, being light, proves to be fuel efficient.
Overall, Thar OG is strong in power, space and presence. Whereas, Jimny is better in practicality and everyday use. You can choose any one of these two as per your need.
