WhatsApp is testing a new feature, with the help of which users will be able to connect third-party AI Agents and Bots directly to WhatsApp. There will be a separate chat for each AI Agent and users will not need to go out of WhatsApp to use the AI service.

According to WhatsApp’s feature tracker WABetaInfo, this feature has been seen in WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.26.35.3. A new Agents section can be provided in the Settings of the app, from where users will be able to add and manage Compatible AI Services.

Users will also be able to set the name and profile picture of each agent. According to the report, one can get the option to add maximum 5 AI Agents in one WhatsApp account.

AI Agent will connect to API Key

After setting up an AI Agent, WhatsApp can generate an API Key. This key will have to be entered in the service where the AI agent is hosted. After this the agent will be connected to a separate chat on WhatsApp.

The setup method may be slightly different for different AI Services. If an agent’s connection needs to be reset, a new API Key can also be generated.

You will not be able to access other WhatsApp chats

According to the report, the connected AI Agent will be limited to its chat only. He will not get access to other personal chats, contacts or media of the user.

The option to add AI agents to group chats and communities will also not be given. Users will be able to change the name or profile picture of their agents from Settings. After removing the agent, its connection will end, but the old chat history can remain in WhatsApp.

There will be no end-to-end encryption in AI Agent Chats.

The most important privacy aspect of this feature is that WhatsApp’s End-to-End Encryption will not be applicable in chats with third-party AI agents. Messages sent to an AI agent may be processed through Meta’s services on behalf of the agent’s developer, and the developer may access those messages as part of its service.

However, personal chats and calls between WhatsApp users will remain end-to-end encrypted as before. Currently, this feature is being rolled out for a limited number of Android Beta users. Most users will not see the Agents section in Settings right now. WhatsApp has not confirmed when it will be released for all users.
