Telegram users suddenly faced trouble on Tuesday morning. In many countries of Asia including India, people complained of difficulty in accessing the app, sending messages and logging into the account. A large number of complaints were also registered on outage monitoring platform Downdetector.
The biggest impact was seen in Singapore, where the number of outage reports on Downdetector reached nearly 4,000. Reports started increasing around 10:20 am and reached their peak sometime after 10:30 am.
Problem faced in these countries including India
Telegram’s problems were not limited to Singapore only. Users also lodged complaints from many countries in South and South-East Asia.
According to Downdetector data, during the peak:
India: 725 reports
Indonesia: 1,284 reports
Philippines: 933 reports
Malaysia: 544 reports
Vietnam: 530 reports
Thailand: 253 reports.
In Singapore, the number came down rapidly after about 4,000 reports were registered. By 11:30 am, the reports there had reached about 350. However, the number of complaints increased again in the afternoon and then decreased again rapidly.
What problems did users face?
According to reports, about half of the users faced problems related to the Telegram app, while about 43 percent of the complaints were related to messaging. About 7 percent of users reported problems in login.
Telegram was working normally for some users, while other users were having trouble sending messages or loading chats. This indicates that it was a temporary outage affecting certain areas and users rather than a complete global shutdown.
What was the reason for Telegram outage?
At present, no official reason for this outage has been revealed by Telegram. Therefore, it would be too early to attribute this to any specific technical problem related to the server or network.
The good thing is that service gradually started becoming normal in many places. Based on the currently available reports, this outage of Telegram appears to be temporary.
